Leon D. Granby, 94, Olney, Illinois and formerly of Newton, Illinois passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012, at Richland Care and Rehab. Mr. Granby was born June 9, 1917 in Oblong, Crawford County, Illinois to Cleo P. Granby and Oma (Randolph) Granby. He was a graduate of Oblong Township High School ~ Class of 1936. Leon was a World War II veteran having served in the African and Italy Campaign. He received numerous medals including one silver battle star. He retired from Union Oil Company in 1982 as a field operator with 37 years of service. He married June (Melton) on October 21, 1945. He is survived by one son, Ron (Debbie) Granby, five daughters, Yvonna (Jeril) Clark, Linda (Jim) Fry, Connie (Bill) Hartleroad, Debbie (Alden) Blake and Sherry (Ken) Duncan. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 14 step grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 11 step great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Granby is preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers, Carl, Don and Lawrence and a sister Mary Katherine Granby. He was a member of the Newton Masonic Lodge #216 AF & AM, having served as Master Mason twice, Newton American Legion Post #20, Olney VFW, and the Grace United Methodist Church of Newton. He was an avid viewer of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy as well as a St. Louis Cardinal fan. He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden.
Pastor Rusty Shields will be officiating the funeral service. Burial will be in Wilkin Cemetery, rural Oblong, Illinois.
